Bluetooth technology allows mobile devices to send and receive messages and data over very short distances (about 40 feet) to other Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as desktop computers, wireless phones, electronic organizers and printers. It allows users in close proximity to quickly and easily exchange information and data. With a Bluetooth-enabled phone in their pocket, users can communicate hands-free through an earpiece. Bluetooth technology uses a wireless personal area network (PAN) standard operating in the 2.4 GHz range at 720kbit/sec. The newer Bluetooth version 2.0 will boost speed to 3 Mbit/sec, increase range to about 90 feet and reduce power consumption by half. Newer Bluetooth devices will also make it possible to run several applications at the same time.
